Welcome to the Catholic Diocese of Galle

The Catholic Diocese of Galle, founded in 1893, has been serving the faithful of Sri Lanka’s Southern Province with love and dedication for more than a century. Guided first by Rt. Rev. Dr. Joseph Van Reeth, SJ, the diocese today embraces the districts of Galle, Matara, and Hambantota, with 17 parishes spread across coastal towns, rural villages, and tea plantation communities. Though Catholics form only a small part of the population, the Diocese of Galle continues its mission of pastoral care, outreach, and spiritual support, keeping the faith alive amidst both challenges and opportunities.

“Our Vision is a Re evangelizing diocese, made possible by the prayerful life of the dedicated priests, religious and laity, through proclaiming the Word of God, celebrating the liturgy, witnessing to Christ in love of our neighbour, and thereby evangelizing others in the Gospel Values.”

MISSION

Inspired by the Word of God, rooted and guided by our Catholic Faith, our Mission is to Catechize our own flock, to celebrate life with them and to empower them to be a participatory Church so that together we bear witness to our faith
